I hope UWA continues this contest! This is the best "best practices" session ever. Congrats to United Ways in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Palm Beach, and Dane County. The video presentations followed by café conversations with the winners was very inspirational. One thing I noticed in dismay: No small UW's won. Danville, VA intends to change that, so look out!

Comments:
This is Sandra Flores from Fresno, Califas: I just ended my presentation for the Usual and Unusual Suspects for Tish McCutchen. I represented one of three UWs for this particular workshop. I will freely admit that I was partial to my Best Practice--the Fotonovela.

While my other two counterparts had worthwhile information, the connection to the audience lacked. My UW was third in line and by the time the 2nd one spoke, people started dashing out.

I think it is very important that our speakers be engaging and maximize the opportunity to share their valuable practices with everyone who attends conferences. Otherwise, we loose the opportunity to share information because we can't keep their attention and simply not connecting with our audience. It made me think....This may be reflective of much of our challenge as a system; too much of the time we simply are not connecting with our audience/community.

I know we have challenges but this is the time for us identify (at the very least think about) the ones we can remedy and the ones that are beyond our control. Then let's work on the ones we can remedy. That is why we are recognizing best practices because the success stories are real and replicatable.

This conference provides an opportunity to "examine fruit" ..the fruit of the labor of colleagues. Fruit we can benefit from in our own communities.

Go forth and examine fruit for the remainder of the conference!

Patrick, I'm part of the Best Practice group and thanks for the comments on the Contest! I hope you noticed that we had smaller UWs that were Finalist. Look forward to reading your entries in Contest V2 :)

Your feedback is soo helpful. It is important for us to hear.

We wonder do you think we should run the contest annually?? Maybe I will post that as a Blog, b/c we wonder if folks will want to submit entries every year for a contest. Also wonder if we need to space it out so everyone has time to develop their programs over the years.
