I don't know why, but for some reason I'm very nervous about this years program. It could be that this year will be comprised of mostly new faces. Despite what people may think, I do get nervous when faced with meeting new people. I quickly adapt, however, and I am eager to meet all the new friends I'll be making. While I am a bit nervous I think most of it excitement. I'll be reconnecting with some old friends that I missed seeing last year and I'm very excited about that.
I'm very eager to see the MS coast once again. This will be my fourth year on the gulf coast, 3rd in MS, and I think this year will offer more to absorb since the first year due to the hurricane season this past year. The first year being the one immediately after Katrina. Also, I'm excited to feel weather above 10 degrees and see something other than snow.
While I don't know the what the jobs will be in detail, I do know there will be some working with the Boys and Girls Club, doing surveys and of course rebuilding homes. All important. I know working with the BGC is great because not only did I go there as a kid but I worked at one through college and I know what the impact of a BGC can be on a community.
In short, I'm just ready to get down there and I've been looking forward to this since the applications went live. I know ASB kicked off yesterday in the Motor City and I hope they all have an amazing time. I hope the alums going to New Orleans make the most of their trip and enjoy the time. Also the other "big" group going to Indiana, I'm very eager to hear of the work going on there. I'll do my best to keep everyone posted on the goings on in Southern MS. Good luck to everyone and know what you are doing, whatever you are doing is making an impact because walking across country starts with a step. Good luck everyone and make the most of your trip. Big E.

United We Can Achieve! ASB 2009

Time always flies by but for me it is going too slow. There are ten more days left for alternative Spring Break to start its kick-off here in Detroit. I was a participant last year as ASB came to Detroit for the first time. It was an exquisite experience that was unexpected. I helped paint a homeless Shelter for mothers and their children. I learned about recent issues here in Detroit such as homelessness and single parenthood. It helped me achieve new goals and create a new life for myself. I am thrilled to be involved with another week of change. I am part of the Alumni Leadership Team this year and I am ready to embark this new journey.

Alternative Spring Break is a force of change and I tried to get as many people involved because I know our world need change and together we can achieve anything! I am trying to visit the United Way for Southeastern Michigan office to help the ASB planning Team as much as I can.

I am excited and humbled to be part of ASB again! It is an inspiration to give myself to the service of others. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said: "What will happen to humanity if I don’t help?"; I say if "we don’t help" as a group we can help humanity so let’s Live United.

Just another ASBer
