OH. MAN. I could not be more excited!!

I head down to SWLA a week from tomorrow.... and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. To those of you joining us for the first time, get ready for the one of the greatest experiences of your life!

I participated in ASB last year for the first time and I had no idea what to expect when I flew down to Louisiana. I immediately met some amazing people, and I still talk regularly with them today. We had some good jokes and some GREAT conversations. I gained skills from the work we did (who knew that I could re-tile a ceiling and it would look decent?).

What else? I also got to meet some of the strongest, most inspiring people in this world. People that were put through a life-changing experience, lost so much, and still have really big hearts.

Does any of this sound good to you? I bet you can't guess why I decided to be a team leader this year :) I'm excited to meet all of you coming down for the week of the 8th, especially those who will be on my team. Start brainstorming some sweet team names now! And for all of my loves from last year...... I can't wait to be reunited!

- Hannah Mac.

P.S. You better get ready to play Scattergories!

I can't believe it, only two weeks and I will be on my way to Mississippi.
I am Katie Nockerts. I was a part of ASB last year in Louisiana, and I will be a Team Leader this year in Mississippi for the week of March 15-22. I go to school at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and the current weather report is 10 degrees, but feels like 0 due to wind along with 4 feet of snow. So I can't wait to get out of the cold. I also can't wait to see all the returning ASB'er and all the new ones as well. ASB was definitely the greatest week of my life so far, and I can't wait to get back and top last year.

See you in Mississippi!!

All that I can say is that I love this place and I am proud to call it home!!!!! For all the people that think differently... I challenge you to come visit and look a little deeper and if you don't know where to start.... Give a call to my girl Jeanette Pierce with INSIDE DETROIT (www.insidedetroit.org) and show will show you what you didn't think was here and how wonderful tis place really is!!!!

The Ray West Memorial Ramp Project has been outstanding!!!! The best family in the world and they deserve this ramp and many other things. They invited us into their family and have loved us from the moment that we stepped foot in the door!! They are Detroiters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is what we do... we love you from the minute that you walk in the door and add you to our family. 2. TEAM FRESH!!!!!!!!!!! You are some ultimate work machines.... Together we get the job done and keep each other going and it shows. The fact that the family children wanted to come out of their homes and help with the project was amazing. I love our TEAM Spirit and that is what working together is all about. WE bring the spirit to everyplace that we go. 3. AS for tomorrow.... I can't wait to pick up my drill!!!!! WE will be able to watch a man come out of his house for his first trip on his new ramp. I am so emotionally filled with a joy that is indescribable!!! Not to mention that they family plans to cook us dinner!!! Another DETROIT thing!!!! I just want to say that I love this project and can't wait till tomorrow.... I almost wish we could have worked through the night!

What Live United Means to Me . . . TAMMY!!!

posted by Administrator
Since we first arrived at the University of Michigan-Dearborn campus people have been asking us Alternative Spring Breakers... "What does 'Live United' mean to you?" I listened to what everyone else thought it meant to them, and was frustrated that I couldn't come up with an answer of my own. It wasn't until today when I was with my group (team 1) working on our site (Vista Maria) that it finally hit me!!!! Everyone experiences "Live United" in there own way, at different times, for different reasons. My own personal experience of "Live United" was one that I will remember for the rest of my life...

In the middle of a dusty, dirty, broke-down, sweaty boiler room I took a second to stop sweeping a floor that was buried under rust and chipped paint. While watching my team work flawlessly together I realized that there was absolutely NO other place I would want to spend my spring break. Just in my 10 member team we have poeple from Michigan, Mississippi, Florida, Deleware, and even Canada (I learned the Canadian National Anthem today). We are American, Portirican, Indian, Asian, Arabic, and Afican American. After getting to know my team better I found that we are even diverse in our religions coming from Protestant, non Christian, Morman, Catholic, and others. Even with all of our vast differences our group still manages to have an amazing work dynamic. We have all come to Detroit with the common goal to help the community and share that love that we have of doing for others. This one common interest that we share as a group outways all of our differences combine. The fact that we can set aside our differences, and forget about our own self interest for one week shows me that it is possible for ANYONE to unite when the common good for others is at hand.

It is not something that can be understood by listening to a speaker, or someone who has been there. The true meaning of "Live United" is something that you need to put an effort in, work for, and experience for yourself. "Live United" can only be realized by those who can not only put differences aside for one week, but by those who are able to make it a lifestyle...

"Live United!!"

Stacy- Great at leading discussions about random questions and a very dedicated volunteer once she starts a project she finishes it and she wants to one day help people with severe mental illnesses!

Zehra- She was part of the group that helped start the volunteer center here at U of M Dearborn and she is very dedicated to spreading service which is why her brother is part of ASB Detroit!

Tim-Is very (strong and a great jumper) and a quiet soul that motivates other through his hardworking example!

Jackie-Has found her passion which is a combination of working with special needs children and being a part of pageants!

Muhi-A comedian and obviously the class clown but is also a very talented poet that is the SG President at U of M Dearborn!

Hey everybody,
Vista Maria was great as usual. The supervisor Bob gave us a new project since we were working fast. We had to clear out a room and as a bonus we hammered a wooden shelf into small pieces. It was 'John Henry' esque work.
We've already painted the building once. All we need is to put another coat of paint on and finish cleaning the area.
We met the girls after work. Since there are two different sections, our group split up. The girls I met today were fifteen years old, but some of them had big dreams. One of the girl wants to go to Wayne CC and play basketball. She wants to get scouted to a university and eventually move to Australia where she wants to study either medicine or law.
One of the people who went into the room with me, broke down because even though these girls have been through a lot, they still have big dreams. That person said they had the same dreams, but they hadn't faced the same situations as these girls.
I did not cry.

March is almost here!

posted by Madelyne

Hi Everyone!

I'm so glad to see that everyone is really excited about ASB, and that Detroit is going well. I've been sending warm weather thoughts their way all week, but I don't think it helped!

I'm getting ready to head down to Lake Charles tomorrow and I'll be there for the whole month of March. I'm pretty excited myself and I hope you're all feeling prepared. One of the best parts of heading down to Louisiana is getting to see the fabulous SWLA intern, Kevin Jones. We have an intern bond this year, but we met the first night of ASB in 2006 and we've been friends ever since. As the alums can atest to, you'll make friends in the coming weeks that you'll have forever ( something about being covered in plaster, paint and dirt together really bonds people). I'm also looking forward to seeing all the other alums I know from the past years and meeting all the new people who'll come through the housing center doors in March.

Although I won't be in Mississippi this year, I do want to shout out to all the people there who have been putting in their hard work. Mary and Markus are going to make sure that all of you going to South Mississippi have an amazing experience and I wish I were going there to meet all of you as well!

I just want to remind everyone to do their travel surveys so that we can be there to pick you up! And to please do your background checks, because without one, you can't participate.

Safe flights, happy travels, and much ASB love,

Maddie

Today we're going back, and we'll meet the girls in Vista Maria again, who were very excited to have visitors.

I Love Love Love my team. We have a GREAT team dynamic and we all have our own little niches. We are 2-2 right now. Today will make it 3-3. Some might think that it's not a good idea, or that we don't get to see projects through. That's untrue but also we have accepted and began to really enjoy our roles.
Yesterday we spent the day at COTS. A few members spent the day in the kitchen actually serving the public and prepping for the meal given today. A few members went to the education portion and typed of resumes for those who needed assistance with that. I went solo to the Accounting department and man was it quiet in there. I was trying to shake things up with an Icebreaker I've learned this week, but it didn't go over so well. They had a few snacks though. That was the highlight of my morning.
Overall, I adore my team.

team bonding!!

posted by Administrator
Yesterday we took on the stairwell at the women & children's shelter. It was quite a bit more challenging than the hallway the day before. The space was much more limited plus we had a few more people there. We started our team's volunteer regonition, and the first volunteer we recognized was Jerrick for being such a good sport on his first day ever painting. It took courage to admit having never painted before, and it helped out the team anyway, because everyone came forward to give their tips and we each learned something from eachother.
It was my first day ever in my life driving in the snow, although I've been given many tips from my family while watching them drive in the snow, so its not completely foreign. I actually got a few calls from people who were worried about me, but my team complimented me on my driving as a new driver, whichc helped cancel out some of the teasing I was getting. All in good fun though :)
We went to the Ford stadium and got a tour afterwards, and Dewayne White came and talked to us. He was excited to talk to us and was eager to sign autographs for us, which was cool.

Then we ate in Greektown and got the whole 'Opa!' experience with flaming cheese and everything. The gyros were tasty, and it was really fun.

Today we went back to the Vista Maria site and finished up the first project we were assigned. Tomorrow we may throw on a second layer. After that we were assigned another project and began scraping the paint in the room. Tomorrow we should be painting the room.

Then, we went to Ford Field for a tour. We learned a lot of facts about the stadium and then met Dewayne White. He is a very respectable and down-to-Earth man who does community service. I am glad to see him on the Detroit Lions. Young sports fans need more idols such as Dewayne White to model after considering what is going on in the sports industry these days. After that we went to Cyprus to eat some gyros.

Howdy Ya'll,
Long day lots of fun!

Beginning
Lots of snow and wood! Our team demolished a huge tangled mangle of branches and logs in these 2 wood chippers in the snow : ) There was lots of silent team work because the wood chippers were so loud we had to wear earplugs. It was amazing and very touching to see everyone just give the look and we would all know to help pull or carry the wood.

Middle
We got to play some fun bonding games while we had our lunch break and we all go to know each other better through charades, word assocation and the human knot!

End
A really neat tour of Ford Field and we got to meet a Detroit Lion Dwayne White! After that we had a delightful dinner at a Cyprus in Greek Town. I tried greek food for the first time and had a great time bonding some more ASBers and I got to see Jess Weaver shes here now!!

IN the words of my team member Stacy I HEART ASB Detroit and everyone in it! : )

We started the day off by going back to the Ray West Memorial Project. Some of us visited with the family while others worked outside for about an hour before we had to move on to our next project at Franklin Wright. Upon arrival, we were given a tour of Franklin Wright. I was so impressed with the work and dedication that takes place at Franklin Wright. The people that work there are so passionate about what they do and they are willing to do whatever it takes to meet the needs of those in the surrounding community. After the tour we were directed to the gymnasium where we were instructed to paint the lower half of the gym. Toward the end of the day were we able to meet the children who come to Franklin Wright after school. It was such a reward to see the smiles on the faces of the kids. I talked to kids ranging from ages 6 to 16. They were so excited that we were there helping to paint their gym. I have to go to make a commercial but I love ASB and I will blog later!

My Tour within the spirit

today was a normal day but few things crashed that changed my view of today. it was very symbolic the way i look at normal actions now. when we arrived at our site, the van got stuck in the snow so we all went outside and help push the car out and TOGETHER we got it moving.
it is really nice to see that team work. we get lost but together we made it for the first day ontime to almost all our events. it was another great team accomplishment.
also, we bonded with our site leaders as they were so great today. eventhough we went through a low moment as we almost get lost but our confessions...made us get closer and understand each other. and the fact that we shared our lowes with each other proved the power of our unity and the great beauty of spirit.

i loved out day of painting....and having fun!!!

Day 2

Hello all. Today we went back to Motor City Blight Busters, only to find out that the organization head was having chest pains and went to the hospital to get it checked out. So we went to our alternate site of Cots, where we had SOO much more fun then yesterday. They were very organized and everything which made the experience way more enjoyable. Me and Jason got to serve lunch to over 100 people... Jason did burgers, I did slaw. We also got parts of the lunch ready for tomorrow; I got to have my hands covered in Lima beans. It was fun. We aren't going back there again tomorrow, which is a little disappointing, but hopefully this next back up site will be just as fun. Oh, and on the way back from dinner at Cyprus in Greek Town, our team (team 4... GO TEAM MCLOVIN) we were laughing our heads off. It was so funny. I'm really starting to enjoy working with these people and hope that our friendships last forever. Before dinner we got to go to Ford Field and have a tour of the whole building. It was awesome. We got to go to the very top floor, floor 7, the roof top... omg it was awesome. They gave us history behind the building and I find out that Ford Field isn't completely done. They are still getting it ready for office buildings and such. Which is cool. Part of Ford Field is the old Hudson Building. anyways, I have a massive headache. I'm going to go back to the field house and take a shower soon, and relax and possibly go to bed before lights out at 12. OH, and at Ford Field I got to talk to Dewayne White for like 30 seconds and get his autograph and get a picture taken with him. ok ok, There are people waiting for the computers. so I'm gonna sign off here. talk to you guys later.

Somehow I didn't comprehend the amount of no sleep I would be getting in this endeavor. I also was not prepared for how rewarding the work I would be filming and helping participate in would be. It's a signature feeling to be greeted with the reality of things. The impact of the work I helped with that would impact so many lives that I never knew I could impact with just this one thing. I look forward to day two with hearty, if not anxious, anticipation.

First Day of Work

posted by Jason Davis

So, today was my first day at MotorCity Blight Busters. First off, John George is an amazing person with what seems to be unlimited energy. He is doing big things, and I am looking forward to joining him in bettering Detroit this week.
Today, we did some demolishing of a future apartment for Detroit citizens. We also cleaned multiple blocks, removing garbage from yards, streets, and the sidewalk. It was nice seeing what just a couple hours of work can do. The area looked amazing. We also did some cleaning around the Blight Busters sites. Judge Mathis, yes the Judge Mathis on tv is suppose to be stopping by tomorrow to see the things that Mr. George and Blight Busters. He is currently working on a new tv show, and will possibly be documenting some of the work we will be doing with the group. So let's see how tomorrow goes, I'll make sure I keep you guys posted on how it turns out.
Oh, by the way, I would like to just give a big thank you to all of the ASB Sponsors, especially FedEx for the amazing Oscar party we had last night. That is where the picture above was taken. So much work went into it, and we all really appreciated it. And in case you were all wondering, I took third place in the guessing the winners contest. I know, I am pretty gangsta.
Well onto tomorrow. I am excited to see what the day has in store. See you soon.

Hi guys! So this is my first blog, and I'm excited to finally be on here, although it almost didnt happen again. It seems that every time I try to blog, something in the University Center breaks :) I am absolutely pumped to be participating in ASB Detroit. What we are doing here has been, and will continue to be, nothing short of amazing. I know that the impact we make on Detroit will continue to inspire others to volunteer. As the first altenative spring break in a major metropolitan area (not including the greater New Orleans area), our experience will serve as the model for all ASB's to come. Once others see what has happened here in Detroit, I can guarantee that cities across America will be clamoring for their own ASB- and this should be the goal! Every year, from here on out, there should be an ASB in any major metropolitan area that needs our help. I know how much this means to Detroit, but I also know that this type of volunteerism would mean just as much to citizens of Washington D.C., Chicago, and any city you can think of. Our goal should be to tell as many people as we can about ASB so that they not only want to volunteer, but feel like they NEED to volunteer. This ASB should be only the beginning of something special- not just in Metro Detroit, but all across America.

Today was the first time we worked at our site which was Motor City Blight Busters. The program leader John George was inspirational to say the least. This guy takes on the toughest task we face in our city everyday. He does it the way it should be done to, one step at a time. His project just shows the work that a few people can do.
I also got to bond with a lot of new people this weekend and Monday just made things so much better. My Team Leaders Jesse and Becka are just great. They are two inspirational young ladies that are beautiful inside and out. Working with my team was awesome especially with our friends from FedEx there. Alex, Damien, and I spent a lot of time having fun as we tore out walls to help start building a loft for artists visiting the community. I also met a great new friend, which just so happens to be my buddy Kathryn :). I heard she was going to be here when one of our mutual friends and I were having a conversation about ASB. She told me how great Kathryn is and she was not over-exagerating. She is a great person and is one of those helping to keep me inspired while I'm here.
The FedEx family has also been a lot of fun. Ben and Alex are great guys who keep us all laughing. Virgil seems to be very inspired by his ramp project and Parul is always smiling. These guys are adding some serious positive energy to the week. All I can say is I hope I get to spend a lot more than just one week with these great new friends. Lets see what tomorrow holds!

Day Numero Uno (for real!)

So, today was really really eventful and fun. We were at Lighthouse Path painting the hallway of the women and children's shelter, which was great because we were covering up this dingy white/blue (DREARY) paint with this gorgeous eggshell/very warm color that just lit up the room with positive energy. We learned so much about our team and although wach of us comes from different backgrounds, it was uncanny how much we had in common in terms of interest and perspectives. At the end of the day we almost finished the hallway, but we were running late, so we had to leave with just a bit left. Unfortunately, even this short lag ended up dooming us to a horrible traffic jam, and what should have taken us 40 minutes took two hours. However, my co-team leader (Ashley) and I had some great fun being out-of-staters, trying in vain to get used to Michigan u-turns and missing street signs. We got to the dinner late, but just in time to hear some great words from Adam Harris and the rest of the team leaders and eat some wonderful dinner at YMCA.Alltogether a wonderful day.

Yo! Today, again, was a very good day. Actually it was even better because we started our community projects. We went to Vista Maria and Wendy introduced us to their programs there and we learned what Vista Maria was all about. Then they showed us the boiler room that needed to be painted. At first the team wondered why they would pick the boiler room as the first place they wanted us to paint. It seemed like there had to be a more important building to paint but we came to find out that the building would not have passed its inspection in its current state. The staff has had it on their list of things to do, but they have not had time to do it because of their normal duties. So by us scraping the old paint and then painting, we saved them from failing their inspection. After that, we went to the Southeastern Michigan branch office of the United Way and we were introduced to their 211 program. They allowed us to listen in on some of their calls. Then we went to the YWCA and had a little taste of Detroit, as well as get introduced to some more employees of the United Way. One thing that struck me today as I was standing in the snow, looking over the pile of scrap wood left over from cutting 2x6s- these people are obviously different. Spring Break is generally the peak of self involvement - a week spent making poor decisions, sleeping in, drinking things out of cups with umbrellas, and celebrating the fact that you've done something well enough to have earned your week with sandy beaches and clear skies. We woke up at 6am. We're lifting heavy things. We're in 30 degree weather and I haven't seen the sun in weeks. We have new fun scars and scrapes to share with each other. We're making a difference in a community.I want to take a minute to say thank you to all the people out there that decided to do something better with their week and to make a difference. You are obviously a different breed of person to do something like this. Many people do this to change their lives - but your lives are already different by signing up.

I definitely want to make sure to say I was blown away by the women in my group showcases their mixture of beauty and muscle as they dragged trees and logs around all day. I have to give a very special mention to Mighty Mouse also known as Zehra, she carried me through the day as I struggled to lift the branches and felt as if I couldn't go on. THANK YOU Zehra for being my motivation today!!!!!
I want to say Thank You to everybody who is participating and doing great things for this city. Taking the time out of their schedules to do something for the city I call home, I personally appreciate all of your hardwork, and will remember everybody I have come into contact with well beyond this week.
Of course I want to give special thanks to my team working at the Habitat for Humanity site, which happens to be in the neighborhood where I spent most of my life. I feel as if I have been granted a golden oppurtunity to make some of my dreams come true. From the days growing up in southeast Detroit watching the area slowly decline and drop into turmoil, I always hoped to be a part of the solution that would bring the area back to the beautiful community that I remembered enjoying as a child. I have always done everything I could to help out, but one person can only do so much and it takes a team to really make change occur. It is definitely a gift to be able to team with people who have the same goals I have, and strive to revitalize a community that many of them have never seen or heard of. I appreciate the commitment and will definitely give every project my best effort so that we all can reach our goals for this week.

What a Day !!

Well, today was the first official day of service out at the sites, and it seemed like the day went on forever, at least from our (Campus Video's) point of view. Although not all of us were able to go out and film, we all got a feel for what you guys were able to do (from our video footage of course). As always, I want to thank our team for going out today... Andrew, Sara, Simon, David, Will, Karen, Paula, Tom, Ashley, and lastly... Z-Warrior!! They came back to the office today COMPLETELY frozen!! They were out in the cold, just like all of you, freezing themselves and not even the warmth of the room and some tasty hot cocoa were able to warm them up right away. And I want to thank Julian for working on one of his many areas of expertise-- music!! ;) You guys are the best!!!I don't only want to talk about Campus Video, though. I want to congratulate all of you who went out today to each site and worked in the crazy cold weather. It took a lot of courage and heart to withstand those working conditions, and I applaud you for that. You truly are an admirable bunch! Right now, it's about 10 o'clock and we have a couple guys out filming, Will and John, and a few of them in the editing suites-- Kp, Dan, and Andrew. (To the guys-- you are doing an amazing job and I'm proud to be a part of this team!!) It's going to be an extremely long night, but the end product will make it well worth it. I am sure all of you will enjoy tomorrow morning's video!!!Lastly... PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO VIDEO BLOG EVERY NIGHT!!! We really appreciate your participation and would not be able to do much without it!!! For all of you who helped our crew and talked on camera for us-- THANKS A MILLION!!! Goodnight,- Mati

The Most Rewarding Day

posted by Administrator
Today has been the most rewarding day for me so far. I woke up with a feeling of excitement mingled with a sense of anticipation. Heading out to our group site in the morning, which by the way is lighthouse PATH in Pontiac, I didn't know what to expect. As soon as we got there though and we were welcomed by the very kind Ms. Liz and Mr. Jim, all of my hesitations were gone out the window and I realized how deeply people like Ms. Liz and Mr. Jim care for and appreciate our work. We immediately set out to beautify the apartment complex by painting the hallways and sometimes ourselves (here's talking to you Amal). The three-level complex houses women and children that are victims of abusive homes. One of these women, whose name I should've gotten, made my day today by stopping with her little boy for just a second and thanking us for our work. It seemed like one of those sappy movie moments in which something very emotional happens that connects the essential theme of the story and that was exactly what it was. Because her genuine praise and gratitude made me realize our essential theme, making a difference in people's lives. Recognizing this brought the bigger picture into focus for me. I helped her in a way that I will probably never completely understand and she, in turn, did the same for me.

At around 3:30 we left lighthouse PATH and attempted to make it to the UWSEM presentation. Due to heavy traffic (which group three has conclusively decided was the reason for our being late and don't let anybody tell you otherwise) we couldn't make it in on time and came at about 6:30. We had to duck down beneath the cameras and I'm pretty sure that that tape is gonna contain a collection of shots of our group's hair and Amal's infamous paint-stained scarf. All I can say is that it's a good thing I shampooed in the morning. By the way, I totally respect the intellect of group three. You guys have priviliged me with some really interesting conversations and I look forward to many more. Now I am here at UMD, typing up my blog and ending it on this note: Making an effective difference is real and I am a fool for only realizing it now.

Vista Maria

Hey everybody
I just came back from Vista Maria. We scrapped the paint and started repainting the boiler room. We thought that we were given the boiler room to paint in jest, but actually Vista Maria needs that room to be up to code and thats why we were given the task.
My groups got some pretty cool people. I'm not naming names, in case I forget anyone, but they all know I think they are a great bunch. I wouldn't pick anyone else over them.
The speeches at the dinner were smooth. If I was a girl, I would have bawled. I'm going to go play basketball or soccer in a few minutes.
See all of you tomorrow

My First Day....of SERVICE ended few hours ago and words failed to discribe my feelings or the thoughts that broke into my mind as i painted every wall and made a difference in single mother's life who lack a home. i felt like we gave an opportunity tp understand what i refused to see for years as what service is.
service has no definition, it can be helping a freind through homework, it can be taking your grandma to the doctor, it can building a home, or playing with a child. i may not see the impact of the service i do but it effected me in the strongest way....it made me think...it made me become more of a human. i was no thinkig about our dinner today or our drive through traffic...i was thinking of how i will impact those single women at Light House Path?
every woman passed by smiled at us....thanked us with a cheer. i am sure painting a wall may seem worthless but the fact that we are trying to beautify thier environment....made me feel happy...the fact that they were happy made me happy. when i first knew i was going to Light House Path, i was not that excited as i did not view that as a "great " community Service...as i been doing homes for the past few months. after today, i relazed service is happiness, service is humanity, service is a journey within oneself. it is something beyond words and i can not even think about it now..... Adam said ... "i need time to reflect and obsorbe everything"
so far i am having fun....but it did not hit me how this week is going to impact em for the rest of my life,,,it will change my career, my veiw and my faith...it will make me the Hope that i will follow till the end.
i just loved my first day and i have nothing else to say as words fail to create the depth of my thoughts.
much love,

Day 3!!

Today... The day that we have all been waiting for. We finally have had the chance to begin our mission. For the past two days we have been getting to know each other, learning about Detroit, and building our team working skills. The whole time we have been wondering... why are we doing all of these ice breakers? Why are we jumping through hula hoops, climbing walls, being blind folded, and... what is all the hype really about??? Of a course, we have all been excited to meet new people, play games, and be "pampered" for the weekend. We expected to help the community, paint a few walls, pick up some garbage, and talk to a few people. But, little did we know that there was so much more!!!I have been blessed with the opportunity to talk to people who have traveled the world helping people on scales large and small. To be surrounded by people who are so passionate about making a difference makes me feel so inspired. Words could never express how fortunate I feel to be here on ASB in my home town of Detroit. It is the most humbling experience that I have ever embarked on, and to know that it is all happening in the very place I live is hard for me to even fathom. I now realize that even if you're just painting a wall, picking up one piece of garbage, or simply asking someone on the street if they need help with something... you are making a difference. ASB has encouraged me to think differently about how I can affect my community. I don't have to go on a huge missionary trip, or give up my daily routine and job to help others. I simply have to take a week, or even as little as a day to stop and think about something else besides the things that are going on in my life. If I just put MY issues aside for once I could help an entire COMMUNITY. I can't wait to go home, and tell everyone I know about the United Way.Seeing and talking to people from all over the country who love Detroit so much that they are willing to give up a week of fun in the sun makes me proud to say that I AM PROUD TO LIVE IN METRO DETROIT!!!!! Thank you ASB... Thank you!!!

Glacier of Dirt

My name is Kathryn Yaros and I am currently a freshman at the University of Michigan Dearborn. I am so proud to live in the Metropolitan Detroit area but unfortunetly I do not know a lot about Detroit. Attending school full time and working 30 hours a week I find that I mainly concentrate on my personal needs and desires; I am so thankful that the University of Michigan Dearborn has given me the opportunity to volunteer throughout the city of Detroit so that I might be able to concentrate on the needs of others and help those less fortunate in whatever way I can.

I am part of team five (Team Fresh!) Today was our first day on the work site. I have worked on ramp projects in the past (but not during the winter time). Upon arriving to the work site I was handed a pick axe and a spade. I was instructed to break up the layer of ice that covered the front yard so that we might be able to implant the ramp. I have to admit the work was hard but I loved it! I was given the opportunity to get to know my team mates and the three volunteers who work for the Ray West Memorial Ramp project (Bill, Mike, and Carl). After a few hours of talking to Bill I was truly inspired by his passion to help those who are secluded to their houses due to physical disabilities. He told me numerous stories, including sad stories and inspiring stories. After pounding the glacier of dirt for hours I didn't feel as if I had truly made any progress, but after listening to Bill I began to realize the power I have and the power we all have to change the lives of others through simple charitable acts.

The passion I experienced today and the passion I am sure to experiences throughout the week will continue to guide me to find my own passion in life. I love ASB and I love the people that put this together. Thank you so much!

OH MY GOSH. today was awesome. team 4 worked with the metro Detroit blight busters today and it was so much fun. today was a lot of odds and ends type of work but it was so awesome. John has camera crues coming through the blight buster headquarters tomorrow with Judge Mathias, so we helped them get ready for tomorrow. We cleaned up about a block and a half of trash and sweeped out the garden areas and such. Tomorrow, we're gonna set up scaffolding where we chipped away ice today and gonna paint a whole wall white so that blight buster's resident artist can create a mural. They said I could break a wall down tomorrow so that's gonna be so much fun. I can't wait. Also, I learned why to never say goodbye to somebody, because saying goodbye is like ending the connection you have with that person. Don't say goodbye because it's like cutting yourself off from the positive connection. Say goodbye to negative ones, but not positive ones. Instead of goodbye, say Peace. GO TEAM MCLOVIN!!!

Fedex is rocking it out!! Not only did they have the most awesome celebration for us, but they continue to get it done. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with two of the most amazing guys today on the Ray West Memorial Ramp Project. Let me tell you that these guys get the job done. Virgle from Memphis and Ben from Battlecreek were rocking it out and really taking the lead today and I just want to send major shout outs to them. And if that wasn't enough Fedex delivered lunch in a first class way with the Fedex truck. All I can say is that the guys from FEDEX get it done and you guys are awesome!!!!!!! A-MA-ZING!!! So a big thanks to Vernice, Tabatha, Virgle, Ben, the awesome lunch driver , and the rest of the FEDEX team(sorry if I forgot anyone or mispelled any names). FEDEX CARES and it shows. Back to BXMS for year 3.

Coming back for a third year has been so far bittersweet. I know I won't get to see some of my "high maintenance" friends or those who belong in a "circus." I've been coping with the fact that I won't get to see some people who've been a staple in my life for the past two years. However, I'm looking forward to meeting new people and starting new relationships. More so, I'm looking forward to returning to the Mississippi gulf region where this whole crazy program started. I can remember my first year down in the area and it was as much of an eye opening trip as I've ever encountered. Biloxi looked like a ghost town only 5 short months after Katrina had hit. I just remember seeing blue tarps and puddles, not people or cars. Also, being chosen as one out of only 100 participants was a great honor. I can't wait to fly into Biloxi and see what the area looks like now and how our impact was part of the first wave of volunteers in the area. That said, I know my people in Lake Charles will continue a winning tradition and I know we are going to have an awesomely good time in Biloxi and start a new chapter in ASB lore. See you all in a couple of weeks.

I can't wait to meet my new team and see old faces. Kevin and Maddie, you're making the alums so proud with all your hard work with UWA! I love you guys and will see you all soon! :)

Hey ya'll!Paulinha here!So... today has been a lot of work!It is 2am and we are still editing here at Campus Video. Dan, Andrew and KP have been locked up in one of the rooms for a few hours now... they would kick everyone else from the room, so don't get near that door.... it's dangerous! Will and John have been working at the other room as well, and Mati was helping me with editing your video-blogs.By the way, guys, do not forget to share your thoughts with us and make sure you video-blog everyday!!! And then make sure you check yourselves out here at the blog and on YouTube (please see posts below).Today I also got to go on the field and my group visited Vista Maria and Detroit Habitat for Humanity. It was freeeezing, but it was so encouraging and inspirational to just see how excited you all are in this work. I was really, really happy to see so many people so motivated to do good and give back to the society....Keep up the good work, and I look forward to working with all of the other groups as well...All right! Those videos are done! Now I get to sleep... I'm soooo going to crash!I'm out!

I Love TARGET

Oh my goodness!!! Ok, for those of you who already know me.. you have probably learned by now that I LOVE TARGET. My family LOVES TARGET!!!! I shop there more than I am willing to admit for fear that I might get in trouble. Just to give you an idea though... I normally go there at least 4-5 times a week. Target is like a way of life for me.... as I begin to sound like a commercial, but the it is all true. I buy everything there except for my milk and that is only because they don't sell the brand, yet. (they are working on it..wink wink) So when I learned that they were a local sponsor, I was excited... and I mean more than a little bit. So I wanted to send a shout out to the Target stores here in southeastern Michigan for always stepping up to the plate to help such a great city and event such as ASB. I was so proud when we all showed up in our jackets for our first Target run. To speak to an associate who told me that she gives from her check to the United Way I was amped!!!!!!!!!! She told me that it made her feel PROUD to see her United Way dollars at work. So for all of the people at the Target who helped up in one way or another, THANKS for not only the great shopping that I enjoy at least 208 times/year, but for great associates who care to give to places like the United Way.So I am singing the Target cheer for you, even though you can't hear it!!! Go Target!!United Way+Target=A HAPPY community an a super happy shopperI love you both!!

Watch Me Grow

When I think about ASB Detroit I am simply amazed!! After today's awesome tour by Jeanette Pierce (that is a shout out...lol) I realize that their is far more work to be done in our metropolitian community than possible in 1 week alone. WE need like an ASB year in DETROIT!!! Yeahhhh get hype ....ASB 313!!!! Ok so I was having a moment, but more importantly I really want to stress that we are a new beginning for something that will grow year by year!

So if you think of your experience sorta like the following: When people see a large old oak tree, they often wonder how old it is when they see it's great size. They know that that old tree has grown and outlasted many storms and generations throughout its existence. That old tree is a representation of great strength and togetherness. People wish to come to enjoy the shade the tree gives, the leaves each fall, and the many possible other moments at the site of the tree. What people may not think about is the seed that planted the tree. This week here in Detroit, we are the seeds. The seeds that are being planted to grow long after we have completed this week, and seeds to take and plant in other places we may visit along life's path. So I just want to say even if you don't see every project this week, just know that you were apart of the 1st ASB Detroit and you are the first seeds that will plant hope for the future back in this community! I hope that everyone has an awesome 1st day of service!!

My Dearest ASB'ers:
Today was really a very inspiring and overwhelming day! I shot about 250 photos today and most of them will be up on facebook tonight. :)
During Operation Adventure, you guys bonded so much and I believe that experience will be crucial to getting you guys through this week.
I think it is important that Operation Adventure teams were not necessarily the teams which you will be with throughout the week. Just remember: These friendships are connections that you will have for the rest of your life. The people you are meeting this week are people just like yourselves! People dedicated to the service of others and their communities. Immerse yourself in this experience and try to step outside of your own box, you will thank yourself later.
I hope that everyone is excited about finally getting to your sites tomorrow.
Well good luck, try to stay warm and remember why you're here... to make a difference... and take that difference home with you, whether it's to Canada (cough), California, Detroit, or Memphis, this experience will change you... and you will change the community around you.
Hasta Luego,
Raech

p.s. I would like to extend my gratitude to Amanda, Cardi, DeLean, Gieric, Nick, Parul, and Rebecca for allowing me to make them even during a few Operation Adventure challenges. Even if Nick did try to rip my arm off... Parul and I def made the best tank and driver, hands down :)

Seriously...get pumped up and start talking up how excited you are to your friends and family. Tomorrow is the day the action begins. In only a day and a half we all have met new friends that will last a lifetime, gained the trust of one another, and even shared our cultures with each other so that we can all begin to relate. Today was our bus tour of Detroit and it was probably the most important part of the program so far to me. I have lived in Detroit my entire life, yet I have always felt like I was alone in seeing the ups and downs of life in this great city. I spent this entire day with a group of inspired people who care just as much about these problems as I do. The realization that help is actually here to try and put Detroit back on the right track to me was a feeling that is simply unique.
I hope that all of our participants feel welcome at UMD and alternative spring break. Tomorrow is the day that we begin great things. Many people are waiting for the world to change. This is one of the few groups that waits for no one, we just see the problem and start the solution!
Thank you to everyone who has come so far from their home to help rebuild mine. Thank you to all the sponsors who are making this possible, and all the great behind the scenes people who are making this an awesome experience for me.

Today has been jam packed with activities.Earlier we did a lot of team building things with Operation Adventure, including the rock wall which was my favorite part. I don't think I realized my finger muscles could hurt like that. I was going to put up a team photo of us kicking butt, but my XD card + SD slot is like trying to fit a round peg in a square hole, so that will have to wait. (PS, if that last sentence meant nothing to you, just ignore it). After lunch we went on a tour of the city. Being from Washington I have heard a lot of bad things about Detroit. When I told people this is where I was going for my project, the typical response was "...Why are you going to Detroit?" In all honesty, from what I've seen, it isn't that bad. Every large city has decay and social issues, problems with crime, etc. Detroit (for whatever reason), has just been stigmatized and associated with these issues more than the average metropolitan area. It is my hope that, as a result of ASB being held here, some of the myths about this city can be dispelled and all of the participants, including myself, can head home better informed. So far I like Detroit for the fact that it has such a cultural diversity, which is something I frequently find lacking in my home state.Tomorrow is our first "real" day at our site. My team, #3, will be at Lighthouse PATH in Pontiac. I'm really excited to go and see the agency we'll be helping out, and I have my fingers crossed that we'll be able to spend some time with their HeadStart class before the end of the week. Since some things got switched around, we now have a Washington and California native heading up a team in a foreign state. Hopefully the aforementioned team member with mad map skills wasn't kidding. Bring on the adventure!

Hey everyone, our first day is almost gone....as all our feelings get revived with each face we talk to, laugh with, and joke around with.the main thing that moved me was our tour. i knew about this tour for a while but never knew how much it was going to change me. i drive to Detroit as i volunteered for few community services but i never saw the history and witnessed beauty i always ignored. it was a great time with every one on that little bus. we all sat randomly and it made us connect in different ways. we chatted, sang, cheered and made fun of each other :-).i am a freak in taking pictures...and i took so many but each time i look through them, it chocks me how beautiful Detroit is. it was very beautiful to be part of experience to learn about my city and my town. thanks for united way, FedEx and UM-D for making everything possible for us. it was moving , exciting, and fulfilling!it is my second day here and sometimes i forget poeple's names but we still cheer each other out and justenjoy each other's company. Jannet was amazing today and her tour was great and to me it was the highlight of my day :-) thank you Jannnet you are the BEST and the Coolest! Can not wait for my first day of service tomorrow...i am scared i have to admit that but in the same time my soul is dancing with excitment...i wont be able to sleep tonight! :-) stay up with me ....i will uploading all the pictures i took today. facebook is being wierd so it may take a while ...but you all need to check Facebook soon!love you all with my whole heart

ASB DAY 2... MY DEEPEST THANX!!I just wanted to express my immense gratitude to all of those who are helping to make this life changing experience possible for myself, and especially for the city of Detroit!!! This morning we were able to get to know the people that we are going to be sharing this week with, and I was surprisingly shocked at how immediately comfortable we were with each other. Even though there are young people from all different cultures, ethnicity, cities, and even countries it all seemed completely irrelevant. The fact that we have all gathered here at the University of Michigan- Dearborn for one common cause has totally erased any barriers that we all may have normally had between each other. The fact that we have all "UNITED" in Detroit for the ultimate reason of helping others, has opened my eyes to what we all can really accomplish when we put aside our own agendas for a week in order to look beyond common barriers and "LIVE UNITED!!"THANK YOU ASB AGAIN FOR THIS AMAZING EXPERIENCE!!!The tour of Detroit was also an excelent experience, and it was great to learn about the city that we are all here for this week! Thank you for the tour!!!God Speed

First Day Minus One: Sunday!!

This morning we all got to do Operation Adventure. I've done some of these types of activities before, but I was surprised that every activity was one I'd never done before, and each required us to trust our teammates and be innovative. It was great. I was just blown away by the quality of the 'puzzles', and the creative ways we needed to work together to solve them. Then we got a tour of Detroit from a world-class tourguide (in my opinion). Many of the old (and new) buildings were so beautiful to me, and I now have no curiosity about people who wish we could bring this style to California. We learned so much about Detroit, especially about its wonderful history. I definitely see not only the potential of this city being great, but that it is already great in so many ways, especially with people like Jeanette (tourguide) being so dedicated to telling its story. And THEN, after our run to Target, FedEx surprised us with a red-carpet-worthy Oscar Party!! They bought us a ton of snacks and decorated the room in the Oscar theme for the viewing. There also had us fill out our 'guesses' for how they'd be rewarded, with some really awseome prizes for the most accurate guesser. Can't wait to find out tomorrow which ones of us are lucky :)

Day One (not counting check-in day) has been awesome so far. I have been able to really get to know a lot the people in this Alternative Spring Break 2008 in Detroit. It is great to meet all of the different people that want to make a difference just like myself. We started the day off with a little piece put together by Operation Adventure. It helped to break the ice between many participants. The groups were different than they will be during the week in our service groups, which I thought was a great idea. It was more of a chance to meet some great people. There were many great group activities, so I will only mention a couple. One was with hula-hoops and a rope and you had to switch hula-hoops by swinging across the "moat" and landing in a different hula-hoop. I think that really brought our group together as we all listened to each others ideas and figured things out together. I also want to mention the rock wall. That was so fun. I dare anyone to try climbing it blind-folded (by the way, I did not make it to the top that time)!Shout outs to my Operation Adventure team (abc order, no favorites!): Amanda, DeLean, Gieric, Nick, Parul, Raechel (for part), and Rebecca! After that we went on our awesome tour of Detroit. Even though I live very close to Detroit, there were things I learned about that I did not know and things that I saw that I have never seen. It was interesting to learn that Downtown Detroit has 37% less crime than the national average! I believe that the only thing holding this city back is its PR, but there are facts proving that it is not as "bad" as people think it is. Also, I did not know that Martin Luther King Jr gave his "I Have a Dream" speech for the first time in Detroit. The day ended with a stop at a restaurant called Armando's in Mexicantown (Mexican food is where it's at) and then a stop at Target. One more shout out to the Brothers of Delta Sigma Phi!

Christy's Views for the Day

The Canadian here! Today was such an amazing day at ASB and it just pumped me up so much for the rest of the week. This morning was spent conducting Operation Adventure where we worked on team-building activities and just generally enabled us to see the different strengths of each person. I met and connected with a new group of people and had so much fun doing the different activities. After lunch, we went on a bus tour around the Metro Detroit area and it was quite eye-opening to see the different parts of the city. This tour basically exposed me to the disparity of wealth in this city and I actually found it shocking at times to see how there could be large mansions in the Boston-Madison area so close to the neglected neighbourhoods where the houses are abandoned and falling into disrepair. Jeanette Pierce, our awesome UWSEM guide for the day gave a terrific analogy for the Metro Detroit area: "The city is like a patchwork quilt with very small squares. You don't have to go far to see something new." It was definitely interesting to see how so many different suburbs and towns contributed so much to the different facets of this area. Thank you Jeanette for such a wonderful and informative tour!FedEx threw us a fabulous Oscars party and it just shows how much the sponsors has helped make this week wonderful for both us and the organizations that we will be working with. It lets us know that our work will be much appreciated by the community and has made me want to work all the more harder to make a change in the region this week. Thank you FedEx, Deloitte, Panera Bread, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Target, and just everyone that has made this week a possibility. I'm so happy already and the week hasn't even really started yet!

I'm Still Not Packed . . .

Ya, thats right, I have been so busy prepairing organizationally for ASB that I never packed for ASB. I also have not yet given up my own bed, but I will... As soon as I go home tonight. I stayed today to work on some of the audio from that wonderful introductory dinner we had last night (Saturday) and have been battling my computer to prevent lock ups. In any case it is coming along and I still got a chance to eat dinner with you all this evening. So I apologize to all of you that I have not yet taken my vow of poverty for the week, but in all fairness I have not been home enough in the last month to even make my usual messes, much less pack for this week. If you are willing to forgive me though please do post to tell me so or tell me to my face when you see me filming you. If you're not willing to forgive.... Well my name really is not Andrew Nowak, I will not have a camera and you can identify me as a green stuffed alligator if you would like to take your aggression out on me.

Big Dose of Fun

Sunday was probably one of the most audacious, memorable day of my life. The day kicked off with bustles far from something i expected would be typical of a "let's get to know each other" activity. Well, it was certainly a get-to-know-each other affair, except that it didn't have the lackluster feel that phrase sends across . It was definitely way more better than that, exponentially, and i mean to say that it was a really great experience that writing a short blog about it seems really hard. The whole ASB Team was divided into five groups, each of whcih comprised of around 7 people. It was a pleasure to be teamed up with Rebecca, Parl, Amanda, Delean, Nick and Cardi. Getting to know their names was uninteresting; bonding with them was phenomenal. We played numerous games and activities that involved teamwork, creativity, ingenuity, trust, and respect accompanied with cackles and guffaws. A very memorable activity, a nameless one, seemed like it was inspired by Tarzan. We got to play like Tarzan very much, except that no wild animal chase was involved; the challenge was that we as had to conquer territory.Probably the most daring, and challenging of them all was rock climbing. It was a very remarkable experience in a sense that it wasn't so much about me advancing through the wall but more so about how we as a group helped, trusted, and encouraged each other that the collective accomplishment as a team was more fulfilling than the individual feat. This was pronounced even more so when i attempted to climb the wall blinfolded, my team giving me instructions and boosting my self esteem. I may not have made all through the way, yet having done it was a great triumph itself. Team 3, you guys rock!

Many Thanks ASB!

Team McLovin

Hey Everybody!!! Heather from Team McLovin here (team 4). This morning was awesome, and the day isn't even over yet. We broke out into 5 teams out on the gymnasium floor and there was Me, Tim, Jason, Virgil, Cassie, Tiffany, and Cristi. (i think that's it) and the leaders who were leading our activities were Kristin & Heather. Tim is crazy, he can jump like Tarzan; which was an extreme advantage for our team during many of the activities. Zip Zap was fun, brings back memories of childhood. I climbed up the rock climbing wall twice, making it half way the first time and practically all the way up the second time. the bell was like an arms length away from me but I got way too scared. But the best part was that Jason helped me all the way up. without him, I would have never been able to get past half way. Commander and Tank was fun, except for the part when Cristi gangs up on me and starts throwing balls at her own tank... (me, and I'm blindfolded...) - Cristi you dork. Just kidding. It's lunch time right now but I will definitely be blogging more later... I still have a ton to say. Oh, and thanks Panera, the food is awesome. bye for now.

So, day one has been pretty smooth. We met with our team and got to know eachother a bit. We are pretty excited, every single team member showed up, plus one! And we have a really diverse team- a Floridian, Canadian, Delawarian (sp?), and of course me, the Californian. We're all part of the newly-formed A-TEAM (holla!!). We played the name train to get everyone in the loop, and told them they had to shout out to Doris (Doris! Doris! Doris, Doris, Doris!!) 'cause its tradition. The weather is beautiful in my opinion, its really clear and steady at about 30 degrees F. It'll be colder tonight, but we're dressed for it.I don't think any of the new participants had any idea how many shirts they'd give us!! I definitely overpacked. I think we have a shirt to wear for everyday, which is great, because I know I'll wear them at home. Can't wait for tomorrow!

I've slept 3 hours in the past 24 and I'm exhausted. But I just couldn't go to bed tonight without stopping by just one last time to let y'all know how grateful I am to be part of this event. I'm just amazed at how everyone - from our participants to our team leaders to our leadership team to our sponsors to our volunteers - has absolutely stepped up to the plate, without question, to give Alternative Spring Break their all.I have so many "thank yous" for each and every one of you. But, as the lack of sleep is quickly creeping over me, let me just get these few out tonight...Thank you to the folks at Panera Bread on Michigan Avenue in Dearborn, who started my morning off with a steaming cup of great coffee as they put together a catered breakfast for me to deliver to our ASB'ers! Your staff is so great - friendly and community-minded. It will be a pleasure to start my morning off with you for the next seven days. (And many more to come long after our ASB'ers go home, I'm sure!)Thank you to the Rene Palileo, the Director of Capital Campaigns and Special Initiatives back at United Way, who met us at 6:30 a.m. this morning on campus to spend his Saturday morning helping the Leadership Team run errands. And a special thank you to Rene's finacee, Julie, who came all the way from Grand Rapids to lend a hand as well. So many members of my United Way family are stepping outside of their "normal" job duties to pull together and make ASB 2008 Detroit happen. As always, I am honored to work along side of you.And lastly (just for tonight - I have many more thank yous to dole out in the coming days), thank you again to the Campus Video Network! I love the work you are doing. I love your enthusiasm. I love your professionalism. I love the smiles I see on your collective faces every time I pass you in the hallway. Before meeting you I couldn't even begin to imagine how I was going to manage the monumental task of documenting ASB. But, now that you are on board, I have no doubt that we have the right people in place to do the job.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."CVN - you are changing the face of ASB. Your work is going to help us expose this awesome event to thousands that would have never known about it otherwise. That has the potential to change the world as we know it. Thank you.

What an incredible day! Everybody is so friendly and nice that it is near impossible to not be caught up in a whirlwind of spirit. The atmosphere is palpable with enthusiasm and the energy is contagious. We heard some really interesting and highly motivational speeches from various leaders today. Then we played personal chairs, which was a lot of fun but caused some minor bruises. Now I'm blogging with my fellow ASB'ers and we're discussing horoscopes for some reason. (Henda thinks she's good at guessing them...but between you and me and fifty other people, she's not). Zehra is an aquarious, Henda is a virgo, Gierec is a saggitarius, and I am...well, take a guess. Looking forward to blogging later and GO ASB!!

Live United!

It's five minutes to nine, and although my body feels drained, my spirit is still in fire as the night slows on this first day of ASB 2008. . The night sort of set the tone for the whole week as "live united" adopted a bit of the dauntlessness to the beginning of ASB 2008. We started the night early with a Kick Off Dinner that warmly welcomed the participants, thanked the sponsors, and introduced enthusistic speakers that pumped our spirits even more. I was moved immensely by the people around me and more so upon hearing the sacrifices some people have made to take part in this experience, their dedication so contagious and genuine. The event was concluded with a Large Group Ice Breaker, wherein we played a game called Personal Chair and got the chance to know each other in a brief, yet fun way. As depicted in the above picture, everbody had a good time. I cannot wait to get to know these people even better. I am so excited with what's instill for us for the next seven days!

Hey Everyone,
ASB has started but still this is a good time for intros. My name is Henda Al-Biatty I'm a junior at the University of Michigan- Dearborn. I'm really exicited to be part of this great experience. Few reasons for this excitment: 1) We are defintelty going to make a difference 2) meeting great people who are so passionate about service 3) and Living in the moment.
So some things I picked in the duration of the two days of ASB are: Randy Dillard's Precious, Kira's cool catch pharse "Crunchy", and Gieric's random saying "I'm a human being not a barbie doll." If you would like know what they things mean. I suggest you ask them. It will be cool way to get to know them as well. I will probably pick up more stuff along the way.

Of Revolution

The night before ASB begins, I cannot fall asleep. I'm nervous, though I'm not sure why. I've just watched "The Motorcycle Diaries" and my mind is swimmng with thoughts of revolution and more countries I want to visit. I wonder if I will ever be a part of a revolution, what Che Guevera felt when he led one. And, suddenly I think, "Shouldn't I be thinking about ASB right now? Where is the excitement that I should be feeling?" It hasn't hit me yet, maybe because the campus has become my second home and I cannot fathom how different it will be in the upcoming week, what this week will mean to D-town. But, for now, I haven't even packed. To take my mind off of things, I decide to check my email. It is 2:04. I am part of a mailing group, and they've sent an email. ~Subject: We are #1~Content: an article about how Detroit is the "most miserable" city in America. I scan the article and hit "Reply"... and write to a person I don't even know. This is what I said from beginning to end:"No.I am glad I received this email at 2:04 a.m. because my first reaction to it was "no". Not in resentment or bitterness, but in reality...not in a state of idealism or foolishness am I saying this, but I believe that this news story is already out-dated.Tomorrow, I will be part of a change... a change that is, perhaps, a beginning. Or, perhaps, it is a series of beginnings in which I partake.Alternative Spring Break has chosen Detroit as one of its three sites this year. Normally, they choose disaster zones such as New Orleans. This is the first time thatthey have chosen Detroit because they were inspired by the efforts of volunteers in this community. Moreover, my university has been chosen as the host site (which is also a first). If this works - and I have every ounce of faith in our volunteers - if this works, then they will chose more urban areas in the future and ask more universities to help them. Two and a half years ago, it was out of frustraion that I helped create a volunteer department at my university. Look at where we are at right now. Check out the website for our blogs... Detroit, the most difficult area to transform, will be transformed this upcoming week. Let that be our source of inspiration... :)

Im Cheating . . I Have Two Words. . .

The one word that I thought of was Inspiration. I believe there is a great calling to inspire others, whether its inspiring some by showing a light that they are yet to see in life, or that person who just needs a boost of encouragement and an example to look to. Inspiration can be such a powerful thing and for ASB 08 I am looking to inspire people in Detroit to also make a difference, inspire people looking for inspiration and direction in life, such as my brother Gage; that he may one day do works like this, and also to draw from that inspiration from within to serve others whole-heartedly.
I asked Gage what word he thought of after I explained to him the week I had ahead of me and I'm always open to have young minds who sometimes grasp a bigger picture of simplicity, to encourage and teach me. His word was Friendship. His explaination was that it was so important to make friends and to "believe in eachother that you can do it." I'm slightly biased bc I am his biggest fan, but he has a great point and I was touched by his little words of wisdom :) Now, I look forward to growing closer with each of you, and believing that while taking on the city of Detroit can be a challenging task, together we can work towards it (even if that sounds cheesy lol). After Gage's pep talk to me, he broke out in song...from the infamous High School Musical soundtrack.."We're all in this together..." :) that will officially be my theme song this week lol! ;-) Okay...I have to finish packing now!! :-O See everyone soon!!!
*Gage also picked the picture bc he said that both of us had to work together in this pic to make the teacups spin at Disney World :)

What a day! I swung by U of M Dearborn at 10:00 this morning to help Angela set up her computer before I headed to United Way. Twelve hours later I'm finally making my way home... never did make it to the office. Every time I thought there was a lull in activity and that I could finally head out, something else happened. And truth be told, I didn't want to leave. I love being a part of this whirlwind of activity! We had six team leaders and support staff fly in today. Only one actually made their scheduled flight and, ironically, she was flying stand by. Everyone else was shuffled from delayed flight to canceled flight to another flight as snowy weather blanketed our part of the country. Eventually, however, everyone made it safe and sound - minus Ashley who is still hanging out in the Phoenix airport waiting for a connecting flight. I want to whine about the fact that I have to be up in five hours to head off to the airport and pick her up, but it kind of pales in comparison to the fact that she'll have spent over 12 hours flying and waiting in airports by the time she gets here. Many thanks to Golden Limo who spent hours working with us today through the many, many switches to pick up our Team Leaders. There has been a lot of effort by a lot of folks to get everyone here today, but it's going to be well worth it. Trust me.Also, a big shout out to Campus Video Network! They're busy working already. In fact, KP (you'll all meet him tomorrow night) was still on campus as I left at 10 p.m., shooting and editing footage. For those of you that didn't catch the "celebrity ASB blog 'drive-by'," check out the comments in Raechel's post: Detroit is ASB. I emailed Charm City Cakes, thanking Mary Alice for stopping by the ASB blog and she took some time this morning to reply. "Alternative Spring Break is SUCH an amazing program..." she wrote.Yes, it is.Looking forward to meeting the rest of you tomorrow! Until then, here is just a small part of your leadership team, hard at work...

Things are Rolling

Its funny it seems everything is finally falling into place at once. The past few weeks of us running around freaking out and getting things ready for all of you coming and participating is paying off.All around from everyone I speak to behind the scenes everything is just ready. Being involved in other things I realize how special it is to have everything ready at the last minute with no need hurry and get anything done. There probably are people still doing just that, but hiding it really well :)...but for once its not me and my people. You're all in for a treat.By the way, Like Mati said, embrace the camera people we are there for you. There may be more surprises, from what we do, than just the DVD that Mati alreayd told you about. I've probably said too much. People in black coats and sunglasses erased the paragraph that was just about to follow here so I guess i can't tell you any more.

I'm so excited about all the ASB's that are happening this year. Detroit will be the kickoff (starting today) and then SWLA and Biloxi will start their ASB weeks. Very excited. As a 3-year ASB veteran, I think that it is so exciting being able to return each year and do something different. As most of you know, I am the ASB Intern for the SWLA site this year. Some of you have got countless emails from me regarding several different subject matters.
This is a life-altering experience and I do promise you that after your week, you will be left more inspired than ever before to get out there and volunteer and use your free time to help others.

I hope you're excited because I really am. I can't wait to see all of the returning ASBers and meet the new ones coming. Get ready for Sonic, kickball, Catch Phrase, crawfish, and lots more.

It's only two weeks away! I'm Ami and I'll be a Team Leader down in Biloxi during the week of March 8-15. What a great way to give back, experience another culture and make a difference in someone's life! As you can tell, I'm really looking forward to the program and learning from it. As the Event Planner for Greater Twin Cities United Way I'm always looking for new ways to engage and introduce young adults to United Way - and I know this week will lend new ideas and learnings on how I can do that when I get back to Minnesota.

I look forward to meeting everyone and seeing what all we can accomplish as a team in one week!

Hi everybody!! My name is Jessica Strachan and first and foremost, I am stoked about ASB 2008, especially when it hits so close to home! But a little bit about myself...I am 19 years old, a Junior at UM-D majoring in communications-journalism and behavioral sciences, with a minor in Spanish...one day I hope to become an influential journalist exposing critical issues and writing to touch people's lives. I love to be involved around campus and am a part of a few orgs including Campus Video and Amnesty International. Outside of that I am very involved at church, always swamped with homework, and have a 9 year-old best friend who happens to be my brother! :) Right now I just try to stay focused on the things that mean most to me like chasing my dreams and also reaching out to people around me. I have been so extraordinarily blessed in life, and the least I can do is give back and help show people a possible love and dedication that they have never seen before, just like I was shown throughout my life. Last year during this time I was in Mexico building houses, serving food, and mentoring children in orphanages; it not only allowed my to be something positive in that community but taught me so much about myself...and I am so eager to learn and be impacted by this year's Alternative Spring Break! I look forward to meeting you all who are traveling in and cannot wait to spend a week in service with some of my closest from UM-D! :) Be blessed and safe traveling everyone

LOL This will be the bonding experience of a lifetime guys, so just come with an open mind b/c there will be a lot of people from different backgrounds and different lives, that all came to help! Hope to see everyone in SWLA really soon!

It's almost here! I think I can speak for most of the alumni when I say that we were looking forward to ASB 2008 since the van ride back to the airport leaving last year's program.

I consider ASB to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so my ability to come back a second year is extremely exciting for me. I'll be a Team Leader in SWLA this year (March 8-15) - I hope to see a bunch of recognizable smiling faces from last year! I know the a few of the Sloppy Caulkers will be in attendance :)

To all the new people out there, get ready. This is unlike anything you've ever experienced. Even if you've volunteered in the past, the bonds you'll form with those around you and the families you help is almost inexplicable. Get ready to to get dirty, get ready to have some fun and get ready to eat some Sonic!

Let's go help some people....

P.S. A shoutout to my boys Adam and Randy and all my other good friends here in Detroit. Good luck with the new ASB program...although I can't be there to lend a hand, know that you're helping to make a noticeable difference in our community. I know it'll be a smash hit!

Hi Everyone!I'm Matilde Rodriguez... a junior in finance at UM-D and currently advertising manager for Campus Video Network. Just like all of you, I am EXTREMELY excited to be a part of ASB Detroit!! Contrary to most of you, I will not be directly working hands on at the different project sites. United Way has given us (the CVN crew) the opportunity to capture as much of this experience as possible on video and turn it over to you on DVD at the end of the week, (I'm not sure if you were supposed to know that, but NOW YOU DO!!! LOL) and we are thrilled and honored to have been invited to share in this monumental experience! As a favor, I am going to ask that you guys do not let the cameras distract you, but most importantly that you DO NOT shy away if any of our video crew approaches you. The whole point of our project is to capture YOUR work, YOUR thoughts, and YOUR experience... it's all about YOU!!!!!!! Your cooperation is essential and very much appreciated. And, I promise.... they're very nice people-- TOO nice sometimes!!! ;)It has been an intense last couple of months trying to get everything prepared and organized, but we are SURE it will all prove to be well worth it at the end of the week!! Can't wait to meet all of you and work with you!!

Take care,
- Mati

Looking Forward to Meeting You this Weekend!

Hello ASB'ers! My name is Ursula Adams and I work at United Way for Southeastern Michigan. I am on the ASB 2008 Detroit planning committee and I cannot even begin to describe how much anticipation there is here on the ground for ASB to begin! The amount of work that goes into planning a service project like ASB is just amazing. For months now we've been scouting housing locations, planning menus, making travel arrangements, setting up media points, planning volunteer activities and working so hard to make sure that this is an incredibly memorable experience for all of us. It's been just a blur of non-stop activity...But, all the extra work aside, I could not be more pleased to have been a part of the planning team here in Detroit.I have to admit to not being very civic-minded when I was in college. If opportunities like ASB were available "back then," I sure didn't know about it. Spring Break, to me, was an opportunity to sit back and do absolutely nothing for a week. I am not a person that normally contemplates regrets, but I have to admit, if I could go back (just a few years, of course) to my late teens/early 20's... I'd be doing exactly what you are about to do here in Detroit.I admire all of you for your commitment to making a difference in the world. I look forward to meeting you this weekend and I hope you come away from this experience as impacted as your planning team has been in creating it for you.

Greetings fellow ASBers and TL's!
I'm Cassie from NC and suprisingly enough I dont have a southern accent. This is my 3rd ASB with UW and 5th overall so I am def. an ASB veteran. The reason I continue with this great program is the fact that after my first ASB, my life changed drastically. I met the best friends anyone could ever ask for and I found my calling... service! My goal now is to spread that passion to other young people, this will be my second year as a TL and I look forward to meeting my awesome team on Saturday!!
I am so excited about serving/visting Detriot as well! I have been to a lot of states and Michigan will be the next state I cross off my list. (my goal is to visit all 50... 19 more to go!) As the title implies and from previous experience I have found that ASB's get more meaningful every year I do them and since this is my 3rd UW ASB I have a weird feeling it will be the best yet!
10 things you should know about me:
I like to have fun with everything I do!
I have a BA in Psyc and a minor in Hist from East Carolina University (the Pirates!)
I am a movie fanatic its one of my fav pastimes
I am an Americorps Vista and I work for 2 non-profits
I love cold weather and snow
I am the year of the Rat in Chinese astrology (2008 is the year of the Rat!)
I love Mexican food
I love getting emails
I think the dollar section in Target is addictive
I love music lots of different kinds
I can't wait to meet all of you in a couple of days! Let the fun/service begin!

Greetings All:I'm Katrina Palmer, senior from the University of Michigan -Dearborn and Detroit native and current resident. This is my first experience with ASB; I'm actually going to Lake Charles, LA next month, but I'm helping to plan ASB Detroit!!!I'm really excited for ASB in general, but sometimes I still can't believe that ASB will be in my hometown. It's kinda weird to see the neighborhood I grew up in and had so much fun in as a child slowly deteriorate. There has never been an abandoned house on my block until this past year, and now there are 3. The hardest part is watching how the economic downturn is affecting the people...families that don't have a place to live in. A lot people seem like they don't even have hope that things will get better. That's why I'm glad ASB is going to be in Detroit. Hopefully, the new and positive energy that everyone will bring with them will inspire others to be creative and finds ways to make the communities of Detroit better overtime.Anyway, I work in the Student Activities Office at UM-Dearborn where I help to coordinate Leadership Programs and I am also the President of my sorority...Alpha Kappa Alpha and a member of the Black Student Union.I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone and having a good time!!!!
