Day 3!!

Today... The day that we have all been waiting for. We finally have had the chance to begin our mission. For the past two days we have been getting to know each other, learning about Detroit, and building our team working skills. The whole time we have been wondering... why are we doing all of these ice breakers? Why are we jumping through hula hoops, climbing walls, being blind folded, and... what is all the hype really about??? Of a course, we have all been excited to meet new people, play games, and be "pampered" for the weekend. We expected to help the community, paint a few walls, pick up some garbage, and talk to a few people. But, little did we know that there was so much more!!!I have been blessed with the opportunity to talk to people who have traveled the world helping people on scales large and small. To be surrounded by people who are so passionate about making a difference makes me feel so inspired. Words could never express how fortunate I feel to be here on ASB in my home town of Detroit. It is the most humbling experience that I have ever embarked on, and to know that it is all happening in the very place I live is hard for me to even fathom. I now realize that even if you're just painting a wall, picking up one piece of garbage, or simply asking someone on the street if they need help with something... you are making a difference. ASB has encouraged me to think differently about how I can affect my community. I don't have to go on a huge missionary trip, or give up my daily routine and job to help others. I simply have to take a week, or even as little as a day to stop and think about something else besides the things that are going on in my life. If I just put MY issues aside for once I could help an entire COMMUNITY. I can't wait to go home, and tell everyone I know about the United Way.Seeing and talking to people from all over the country who love Detroit so much that they are willing to give up a week of fun in the sun makes me proud to say that I AM PROUD TO LIVE IN METRO DETROIT!!!!! Thank you ASB... Thank you!!!
